Etosha, meaning ’Great White Place’, is a vast area covering some 130km (80 miles) in length and dominated by a huge salt pan that was, back in the mists of time, a giant lake. When the ground is literally made of salt, this presents a challenge to the wildlife living here. Nevertheless, during the rainy season the pan becomes a shallow lake once again, attracting thousands of wading birds, including flamingos.

But the salt pan is not the only attraction of Etosha, in fact the main section of the park is comprised of mopane scrub, with excellent wildlife viewing prospects. Animals that you can expect to see here include elephants, giraffes, lions and rhinos, as well as the more elusive cheetahs and leopards. The vegetation of Etosha is somewhat ghostly, with swollen moringa trees (sometimes mistaken for baobabs) which look like they are growing upside down, and red bushwillow.  With clear blue skies and crisp clear light it is a great place for photography.

There are four excellent camps in Etosha, as well as numerous private lodges and hotels, so it is never hard finding accommodation during your safari if you decide to go it alone. All of the camps have places for tents, as well as swimming pools, basic shops and restaurants.
