Windhoek: Namibia's Capital City
Slap bang in the middle of Namibia, Windhoek seems an odd place to build a capital city. The moment you set foot in Windhoek its German influence is apparent, with neatness and orderliness being the order of the day - in stark contrast to most other African cities. It is located in the hills of the Khomas Highland plateau at around 1,700m (5,600ft) and enjoys clean air and a good climate. With only around 300,000 citizens Windhoek is no New York but its attractions are numerous and it is a good place to relax for a few days and perhaps take in a performance at Namibia’s only theatre.
Windhoek is home to the country's international airport and many people use the city as a place to stay for a night or two at the beginning or end of their tour. But linger a while and you'll get a feel for Namibia's capital. There are a number of good restaurants and cafes and the surrounding countryside is easily accessible. Stroll aong Independence Avenue and you'll come across many of them, and it's a pleasure to sit in the sun with a coffee and just watch people go by. This is also where youll find the city's museums and galleries, as well as Windhoek Zoo Park. The Bushman Art Gallery is worth a visit if you are interested in African arts and crafts, and you can find plenty of carved masks, carpets woven from karakul sheep wool and a wealth of jewellery and pottery - ideal for souvenir shopping!
Aside from the city centre, Windhoek's suburbs contain several worthwhile sites. The Botanical Gardens of Namiia can be found in Klein Windhoek - a lovely 11 hectare park showcasing much of the country'd flora. Also worth a visit is Namibia Breweries, where you can watch Namibia's most popluar beers being made - and taste it afterwards.
One of Windhoek’s best known institutions is Joe’s Beer House, a visit to which no trip to the city is complete without. It’s not just beer on offer, but good food and, as the ad says ‘the portions are generous, the beer is ice cold and good conversation is abundant.’
