Experience a train ride with a difference on this amazing one of a kind journey from Windhoek to the coastal town of Swakopmund on board the luxurious and comfortable Desert Express Train.

The journey takes you via one of Namibia’s private game lodges with a short stop and game drive as well as an excursion into the dunes the next morning before arriving in Swakopmund. You are enticed to combine your tour with a short safari from Swakopmund to one of Namibia’s best known attractions such as Sossusvlei or Etosha.

Itinerary

Day 1 Friday: Windhoek: Desert Express & safari excursion

Check in at Windhoek Station at 11h30 in winter for departure 12h00, or 12h30 in summer for departure at 13h00. You will be welcomed on board the train with a complimentary drink and delicious open sandwiches. The train leaves Windhoek and you will arrive at Oropoko Game Lodge in the afternoon where you will be taken on a game drive. After your safari experience the train will proceed through the desert and stop at a secure siding for dinner and overnight. Gaze at the starry African sky while you dine on fine Namibian cuisine

Day 2 Saturday: Desert Express: Dune excursion and arrival in Swakopmund

Enjoy breakfast on board the train and continue deeper into the desert where you will be taken on a guided dune excursion. Experience the magic of this secluded part of the Namib which is not visited by many other tourists. After the excursion the tour proceeds to the bustling coastal town of Swakopmund with arrival at around 10am at Swakopmund station. This concludes the tour and you can head to your accommodation establishment, explore the side-walk cafés and variety of shops, or enjoy one of the many activities available in Swakopmund.

Weather/Best time to travel: You can visit Namibia year round.  Partially covered by the Namib, Namibia's climate is generally very dry and pleasant. Namibia experiences summer rainfall (November to April). January and February are hot, when daytime temperatures in the interior of the country can exceed 40ºC , but nights are usually cooler. Winter nights can be cold, but days are generally warm and quite nice.

Remember to pack: A warm jacket for colder evenings and a high factor sun block, sun hat and sunglasses to protect against the African sun.
