Then proceed to the magnificent Fish River Canyon, second in size only to the Grand Canyon. Drive deeper into the Namib desert to visit Sossusvlei, with some of the highest sand dunes in the world. End your tour with two nights at the lively coastal town of Swakopmund before returning to Windhoek.

Itinerary

Day 1 Windhoek to Kalahari

Arrive at Windhoek International airport, meet & greet with an Albatros representative for travel info and assistance with the collection of your rental car. Drive through Windhoek and head towards the Kalahari desert. The red sand dunes offer a beautiful setting as you go on an exciting nature drive with lots of antelope and bird species to feast your eyes on.

Arrive at your lodge in the heart of the Kalahari. Optional activities include donkey chart rides, guided nature drives or sun downer excursions.

Driving time: Approximately 3 hour drive from Windhoek International Airport to Kalahari Farmhouse along the B 1 and C20. The distance is about 300 km

Day 2 Kalahari to Fish River Canyon

After breakfast head south and spend two nights at the Fish River Canyon. Enjoy the magnificent scenery as you drive to your lodge, which is interestingly decorated with old car parts dotted around the property.  Antiques adorn the interior and there is a swimming pool where you can relax and cool off after the days drive.  Tonight you can feast on the delicious homegrown cuisine at the lodge’s restaurant that is at the forefront of hospitality in Namibia (dinner for your own account).

Driving time: Approximately 5 hour drive from Mariental to Fish River canyon travelling along the B, B4, C12, and C37. The distance is about 470 km

Day 3 Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon was not only created due to water erosion, but also a sudden shift in the earth crust about 500 million years ago and is the second largest in the world, smaller only than the Grand Canyon. The huge ravine is about 160km long, up to 27km wide and almost 550 metres deep in places. Explore the canyon from the viewing point or on foot on one of the many hiking trails. The scenery in this area is magnificent and the canyon is breathtaking in its vastness.

Day 4 Fish River Canyon to Helmeringhausen

Today you will drive further into the desert via Aus, situated in an area well known for its wild desert horses.  Stop at the sign-posted Garub waterhole, a covered observation stand from where you can closely view these amazing animals that have adapted to the harsh desert climate.

Continue to Helmeringhausen, which offers the opportunity to relax and enjoy the ambience of a time gone by, allowing you to really indulge in the peace and tranquillity of the Namib Desert.

Driving time: Approximately 4 hour drive from Fish River Canyon to Helmeringhausen travelling along the C12, B4 and C14. The distance is about 360 km

Day 5 Helmeringhausen to Sossusvlei

After breakfast depart from Helmeringhausen and drive deeper into the desert to spend two nights near Sossusvlei. Sossusvlei is almost completely surrounded by tall, sharp edged dunes, beyond which there is a sea of sand that stretches all the way to the west coast.  The magical colours of the golden dunes will leave you in awe, especially during sunrise and sunset.

Drive to your lodge, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful desert atmosphere.  Depending on your arrival time you could visit Deadvlei, a vast area of white cracked clay and skeletal camel thorn trees.

Driving time: Approximately 4 hour drive from Helmeringhausen to Sossusvlei travelling along the C27 and the C19. The distance is about 285 km

Today you can rise early and drive into Sossusvlei, in time to catch the early morning light dancing across the dunes.  Unless your car is a 4x4, drive to the parking area from where you can either walk or take the 4x4 shuttle to the dunes (for your own account).  Do not miss the opportunity to climb the dunes (some of the tallest in the world) and appreciate the horizon from these majestic natural heights.

Visit the nearby Sesriem Canyon, which can hold water long into the dry season because it is so deep and sheltered.

Enjoy the welcome reprieve from the desert heat as you explore the canyon. Afterwards, retire to the swimming pool of the lodge to cool off and relax as you breathe in the crisp, clean desert air.

Day 7 Sossusvlei to Swakopmund

Shake the sand out your boots and depart for Swakopmund, Namibia’s premier holiday resort. Swakopmund is a bustling coastal town with lively cafes and various shops to discover. Explore the town on foot, stroll along the beach or take part in one or more of the numerous activities Swakopmund has to offer.

Depending on your arrival time you could take part in one of the numerous activities Swakopmund offers, including a Township or Desert Tour.

Driving time: Approximately 5 hour drive from Sossusvlei to Swakopmund travelling along the C14. The distance is about 365 km

Swakopmund is known as the adventure capital of Namibia, and today you can choose from the many activities available.  For the more adventurous there is quad biking, sand boarding or scenic flights to name a few.  You could enjoy a leisurely cruise where dolphins and seals swim alongside the boat, offering fantastic photo opportunities, or a visit to the Walvis Bay wetlands.  The snake park and aquarium in Swakopmund are also worth a visit.

After a leisurely breakfast return to Windhoek. Drive to your guesthouse in a leafy suburb of the city. Windhoek offers a variety of shops and restaurants.  Explore the town before you enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants in Windhoek; particularly popular is Joe’s Beerhouse which has become world famous for its variety of game dishes on offer each night.

Weather/Best time to travel: You can visit Namibia year round.  Partially covered by the Namib, Namibia's climate is generally very dry and pleasant. Namibia experiences summer rainfall (November to April). January and February are hot, when daytime temperatures in the interior of the country can exceed 40ºC , but nights are usually cooler. Winter nights can be cold, but days are generally warm and quite nice.

Remember to pack: A warm jacket for colder evenings and a high factor sun block, sun hat and sunglasses to protect against the African sun.
