Practical information
Excursions. We recommend the following excursions during your stay at Southern Palms. These are not included in the price of the stay.
The Paradise Divers – Wasini Dhow Safari. You will be picked up from your hotel and driven to the tiny fishing village of Shimoni through the villages found under Coconut, Cashewnut, Mango trees and other evergreen vegetation. You will also have a view of mangrove forests. On arrival at Shimoni (the place of the cave) you will be met by the crew who will brief you and then welcome you for a guided visit to the historical slave cave before being taken to the dhow. You will be warmly ushered into the boat and served with drinks. While cruising in a Swahili dhow (starting from the jetty at 08.30hrs) around the Wasini Island and its environs on your way to the Kenya’s famous Marine National Park (Kisite Park) you will have a very good chance of spotting and swimming with dolphins depending on sea conditions. At the marine park, you will have a chance to snorkel on the shallow and protected reef. After snorkeling and dolphin spotting, you will be welcomed to the restaurant which is situated at a position giving you a full view of the Wasini Channel. Here you will be served with a drink and offered a selection from the buffet menu.
You will start with the famous Swahili soup served with chapattis and then the main course composed of mainly fresh sea food influenced by vegetarian Swahili cuisine. Chicken is also available incase you don’t eat fish. After lunch, you will relax on Funzi chairs while sipping tea or coffee. You can also visit the village in Wasini Island at no extra cost.With all what you will see and experience, the time will then come to say goodbye to the historic Wasini Island. Price $130 per person.
Mombasa City Tour. This includes a visit to the old town with its maze of narrow twisting streets, the former slave market and dhow harbor. You could also visit Fort Jesus which was built by the Portuguese in 1593 and is now a museum. Price $140 per person
Tamarind dhow lunchtime cruise. The lunchtime cruise departs from the Tamarind jetty at.1.00 pm, and cruises gently up the Tudor Creek to a quiet spot where the dhow moors. Lunch consists of a delicious Tamarind seafood platter with a selection of Kenya's wonderful seafood or a prime fillet steak followed by a fresh tropical fruit - salad and rounded off with Kenyan coffee and halwa. The dhow returns to the jetty at 3.00pm. This luxurious experience is a must, and a truly unique way of seeing Mombasa. Price $80 per person
