Experience Mana Pools, Hwange and so much more on a Zimbabwen safari

For the last few years Zimbabwe has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Saying that, the natural beauty that drew, and continues to draw, so many people to this wonderful country has not diminished. Considered a favourite destination for safari connoisseurs, Zimbabwe is bound to delight and antrance the visitor in equal measure.

Highlights include:

Mana Pools National Park. Imagine watching herds of elephants drinking the cool river water of the Lower Zambezi beneath overhanging cliffs. Mana Pools is a World Heritage site and covers 2,000km2 of unspoiled riverfront vegetation. Perfect for walking safari holidays, the park hosts numerous species including Nile crocodiles, the Nyasa lovebird, Livingstone’s flycatcher and the yellow spotted nicator, to name but a few.

Hwange National Park. This is Zimbabwe’s oldest game reserve and is roughly the same size as Belgium. It is comprised mostly of savannah, woodland and scrub and is considered to be one of Africa’s finest reserves. The largest population of painted hunting dog can be found here, as well as elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard, white and black rhino, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, sable, kudu, eland, waterbuck, wildebeest, impala, zebra, baboon, jackal, bat-eared fox, warthog and many other smaller species. You name it, Hwange (probably) has it!

Victoria Falls. Called 'Smoke that Thunders' (Mosi-oa-tunya) by local people, Victoria Falls lies on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. What could be more reminiscent of Africa than these, the largest waterfalls in the world? Named ‘Victoria’ by the Scottish explorer David Livingstone, the falls are still and essential feature on any tour of Zimbabwe and are one of the seven wonders of the world.

Matopos National Park is situated in the magnificent Matobo Hills, a range of domes, spires and balancing rock formations, which have been hewn out of the solid granite plateau through millions of years of erosion and weathering. The majestic and rugged terrain of the park is a hiker’s paradise and is home to a wide variety of animal species, including giant black eagles. The area also has great spiritual and cultural significance to the local people and is one of the best places to find prehistoric cave paintings. Cecil Rhodes’ tomb can also be found here.
